Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 91st edition of the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program encouraged the listeners to participate in Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and showcase their patriotic spirit. He began the program by explaining the importance of this edition of Mann Ki Baat as India completes 75 years of Independence. He was elated to share the splendid and historic moment with all the listeners.

The Prime Minister encouraged everyone to salute the martyrdom of Shaheed Udham Singh Ji, one of the great revolutionaries who sacrificed his life for the country. Following this, he talked about Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), that is taking the shape of a mass movement.

He mentioned an important event that was organised recently in Meghalaya, dedicated to the life of U Tirot Sing and how he fiercely opposed the British conspiracy to control the Khasi Hills. Several cultural programs and performances were a part of this program. A unique carnival was also a part of the Tirot festival where Meghalaya's cultural magnificence was showcased. Speaking on the same, the Prime Minister mentioned Karnataka’s Amrit Bharati Kannadarthi initiative, under which multiple cultural programs were celebrated at 75 iconic locations in the State.

He also discussed 'Azadi Ki Railgadi Aur Railway Station' event that showcased the role of Indian Railways in the freedom struggle. For example, Gomoh Junction in Jharkhand has been officially renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Junction, Gomoh. This was the station where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose dodged British officers and boarded the Kalka Mail. He also mentioned Kakori Railway Station which has been associated with bravehearts such as Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaq Ullah Khan.

For the 75th Independence Day, 75 railway stations have been identified across 24 States which will be decorated, and several cultural programs will be organised there to celebrate AKAM.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign that has been launched under AKAM. He urged the citizens to hoist the National Flag in their homes from 13th to 15th August. He elucidated the relevance of the tricolor and how it connects us and inspires us to contribute towards our nation. Adding to this, he encouraged everyone to put up the tiranga as their social media profile pictures from 2nd to 15th August.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the relevance of 2nd August which marks the birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya, the designer of our national flag. He paid his tributes to not only Pingali Venkayya but also Madame Cama, a great revolutionary who played an integral role in shaping the tiranga.

He further spoke about the significance of Melas/Fairs in the cultural diversity of India. Some of the iconic Melas that were mentioned were:

  • Minjar Mela, Chamba
  • Jagra Fair, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand
  • Samakka-Saralamma Jatara Fair, Telangana
