Buldhana, Maharashtra

June 30, 2022

Bhavanji Arjun Khimji was born on 20 July 1902 at Khamgaon, Vidarbha region (now in Buldhana district) in Maharashtra. He pursued inter commerce from R. A. Podar College of Commerce & Economics, Matunga, Bombay. He was a cotton merchant by profession and associated with many organisations such as the Indian Merchants Chamber, Bombay Cotton Merchants, East Indian Cotton Association Ltd, and Bombay Port Trust among others. He took keen interest and was actively involved in various educational trusts, medical aid trusts, and relief committees, such as President, Kutch Congress Earthquake Relief Committee, Bhuj, Vice-President, Kutch Central Earthquake Relief Committee, and many more.

His contribution to the freedom struggle is quite creditable. He was a member of the All India Congress Committee. He also served as a treasurer of the Bombay Provincial Congress Committee (BPPC). His family interestingly recounts one of the experiences of freedom struggle. Accordingly, on 17th November 1938, Bhavanji, along with other members of BPCC, Nagindas Master, and S. K Patil, was present at the Central Station when Dorabji Parikh and his batch of Satyagrahis left for Rajkot. In a cheering moment, the exciting gathering of Bhavanji and others garlanded those Satyagrahis. Joining the trend, Bhavanji too attended the call of the Quit India Movement and was arrested on 9 August 1942 along with other Congress leaders. Drawing information from his present descendants, what we know about his last days is that a prolonged illness caused his death on 27 September 1970 in Bombay.
