Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Kashinath Dudhiraj Devgharkar was a Congress leader hailing from Poona, a city in western India. He played an active role in the Indian Independence Movement and made significant contributions toward achieving India's freedom from British rule.

On August 15, 1932, Devgharkar declared himself as the 36th dictator of the Satara district Congress Committee at Thakari in the Wala Taluka. In his speech, he encouraged people to support Congress and boycott foreign goods, a strategy adopted by the Indian National Congress to weaken the British economy and their rule. However, his actions attracted attention, and he was subsequently arrested. On August 17, he faced prosecution and received a five-month sentence of rigorous imprisonment under section 17(1) of the Criminal Law Amendment Act. Despite these consequences, he remained dedicated to the cause of Indian independence and continued fighting for the rights of his fellow countrymen.
