Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Damodar Vishnu Ekbote

Satara, Maharashtra

May 22, 2023 to May 22, 2024

Damodar Visnu Ekbote was a participant in India's freedom movement, but limited information is available about his background.

In the early 1940s, during a period of increased mobilization for independence, individuals from various backgrounds were involved in the struggle. Ekbote, like many others, actively engaged in the cause. On January 28, 1941, he offered Satyagraha to express opposition to British colonial rule and promote anti-war sentiments. Consequently, he was arrested and sentenced to six months of rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs. 150, for his perceived violation of certain rules. This was not his first encounter with legal consequences, as he had previously served one year of rigorous imprisonment for participating in the flag Satyagraha in 1932. Despite the risks, Ekbote remained committed to the cause of independence through non-violent means.

In the larger picture of India's freedom movement, Damodar Visnu Ekbote's contributions, although limitedly documented, demonstrate the widespread engagement of individuals from diverse backgrounds. As part of a wave of mobilization during the early 1940s, Ekbote actively participated in promoting anti-war sentiments and expressing opposition to British colonial rule through non-violent means.
