Amrit Sarovar Mission: Construction of 25000 Amrit Sarovars completed within 6 months of launch
November 25, 2022
In order to address water crisis in rural areas of the nation, Mission Amrit Sarovar[1] was launched on April 24, 2022, by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The goal was construction of 75 Amrit Sarovars in each district during the 75th year of independence.
More than 25,000 Amrit Sarovars have been constructed within six months after the launch of Mission Amrit Sarovar. The Government has planned to construct 50,000 Amrit Sarovars across the country by August 15th, 2023. As of November 17th, 2022, approximately 90,531 sites had been selected for the construction of Amrit Sarovars, and work had begun on 52,245 at the selected locations. An exclusive portal has been created that captures activities happening under Mission Amrit Sarovar.
Mission Amrit Sarovar follows a ’whole of society’ approach, wherein the Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change are cooperating with technical assistance from the Bhaskaracharya National Institute of Space Applications and Geo-Informatics (BISAG-N).
Since jan bhagidari is the core of Mission Amrit Sarovar, cooperation from all segments of society is required. Freedom fighters and their families, relatives of martyrs, Padma award recipients, and the gram panchayat's oldest resident have helped in setting up the Amrit Sarovar foundation of the project. Tree plantation activities have been conducted at these sites with the help of the general population. In light of this, on August 15th, 2022, the Tricolor was hoisted at the Amrit Sarovar sites in the present local residents and elected officials showcasing unity and patriotism among citizens of the country.
Amrit Sarovars have the potential to boost the economy in rural areas. The Sarovar can be used for fish farming, fox nut cultivation, and higher production of food grains. Click here to know more about Mission Amrit Sarovar.
