Independence Day of India is celebrated annually on the 15th of August. This day signifies India’s long-fought victory and reminds us of the valiant men and women who laid their lives during the freedom struggle.

This Independence Day is especially significant as it marks 75 years of India’s independence. To commemorate this momentous occasion, the Government of India launched ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ with the objective to recreate and renew the patriotic fervour of the independence movement, to recall the contribution of the freedom fighters, especially the unsung heroes of India’s independence; to spotlight and instill a sense of pride in the country’s achievements; and to shape a vision and roadmap for India’s future.

Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav was inaugurated on 12th March 2021 by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he flagged-off a revival of the historic freedom march from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi. Speaking at the occasion, the Hon’ble Prime Minister said “This one yatra of Gandhi Ji was an inspiration to the freedom struggle which led the masses to join it. This one yatra had spread India’s perspective on its independence to the whole world. It was historic because Bapu’s Dandi yatra included the insistence of freedom as well as the nature and ethos of India.” Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav shall conclude on 15th August 2023.

Over the past 17 months, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav has truly shaped into an initiative that is powered and led by the aspirations and hopes of the people of India, with outreach across both urban and rural areas, especially smaller towns and local communities. Events and initiatives organized under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav have seen enthusiastic and a wide range of participation, from the Central, State, and Local Government bodies to private sector entities to individuals, especially the youth. The initiative of ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ which encourages people to bring the Tiranga home and to hoist or display it from 13th to 15th August has seen an enthusiastic response from across the nation!

Leveraging this momentum and patriotic fervour of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the focus is now on nation-building for the future—focusing especially on the next 25 years when we shall achieve the historic milestone of 100 years of India’s Independence. India has emerged as a leader and is continuously evolving. Our beloved ‘Tiranga’ is soaring higher with each passing day, and our Independence Day is a reminder for preserving its integrity with all that we have.
