Jambulingam Mudaliyar was born in 1890 in a Sengunthar family in Thirukandeeswaram village. He was an Indian philanthropist, politician, landlord, and freedom fighter. He discovered the presence of lignite coal in the Neyveli region and donated several hundred acres of his own land to establish the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, India Limited. In 1871 the British Government passed an Act commonly known as the Criminal Tribes Act. He worked hard for the welfare of tribal people and protection against the Criminal Tribes Act. The British government arrested some of the members of the Vembur Paraiyar and Piramalai Kallar under the Criminal Tribes Act, formed the Aziz Nagar settlement in the southern districts, and jailed these people in this settlement. The oppressed people in the Aziz Nagar settlement were without even basic facilities and food. Jambulinga Mudaliar visited the Aziz Nagar settlement unofficially and provided food and basic necessities to the affected people there. Jambulinga Mudaliar vehemently opposed the Criminal Tribes Act, but only the Criminal Tribes Act against the Vanniyar Padayachi of South Arcot was repealed. Jambulingam Mudaliar had a great zeal for the spread of literacy among the rural population. He occupied many important government posts. To honor his services, the British Government conferred the Rao Bahadur Award to Shri Jambulingam Mudaliar in June 1934. He passed away on 28 October 1970
