With a mesmerizing Himalayan backdrop, and the holy Ganga flowing through, Rishikesh is a picturesque town located in Uttarakhand. The ghats of Rishikesh are known for their calm environment and over the years, Rishikesh has become a Yoga and spiritual hub. Rishikesh is the beginning point of the Char Dham yatra. For the adventure seekers as well as spiritual guidance, this place has a lot to offer.

Presently, Rishikesh is a tourist hub and a popular pilgrimage in India. People from different parts of the world visit this beautiful town by the Ganga. The English music band ‘The Beatles’ visited Rishikesh in 1968, and they composed several songs during their stay at the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram. There is also an ashram named after them.

Rishikesh also hosts International Yoga Week annually and witnesses the massive participation of natives as well as tourists. The peaceful Ganga Aarti on the ghats in the evening is especially tranquil.

Apart from the above, Rishikesh is also a popular destination for water sports such as rafting and cliff-jumping. Rishikesh has become a popular Holi celebration destination over time. Easy accessibility by rail and road provides an opportunity to visit the place during festivities.

Steps were taken by the Government in regard to Yoga Tourism in Rishikesh

Yoga, the essence of Rishikesh

Places such as Rishikesh and Haridwar are now being promoted as Yoga tourism hubs in India. The ‘place of sages’, Rishikesh has many Yoga camps organized annually to preserve and promote the Yoga culture of the country. As we are celebrating 75 years of Independence, we shall also celebrate the aspects that make our nation unique and diverse at the same time. Tourism and Yoga are aspects that require more attention, and the Government is taking initiatives to boost these. The Ministries of Ayush and Tourism are putting forward the message of Yoga tourism and creating awareness about the same. The Government is also providing visas for attending short-term Yoga courses in India to tourists from abroad.

Rishikesh perfectly preserves India’s rich heritage, including some of India’s most valued aspects—the holy Ganga and Yoga. A simple and small town like this inspires us to indulge in our history and celebrate our culture as we move forward toward India@100.
