Mairembam Koireng Singh (19 December 1915—27 December 1994) was born in an aristocratic family in Moirang. During his childhood days, he firmly stood against the social divide created by the Maharaja of Manipur in the form of levying tax (Chandon Selkhai) on the poor people for putting ‘Chandan Tilak’ on the forehead. He stood against the anti-people institution of the monarchy (1926 – 29). He successfully led the Satyagraha movement over the issue of Lord Thangjing Temple and handed over the affairs of the deity to the people (1952). He helped establish a large number of educational institutions. He entered active politics in 1938 as a founder of the Nikhil Manipuri Mahasabha and responded to the Swadeshi Movement of Gandhiji, He withstood monarchical oppression. He responded to the call of Netaji in 1944 and received the Indo-Japanese Advance Party (Intelligence Group of the INA) and extended maximum cooperation in the war efforts. He himself led the Bahadur Group of the INA to Moirang. On being declared a ‘traitor' and ‘shoot-at-sight’ order being passed on him by the British government, he went underground and escaped along with his coworkers in July 1944 to Burma where he met Netaji in September 1944. Later the British arrested him in September 1945 and jailed him for eight months. On release from jail on general amnesty he was brought to Calcutta in April 1946 and reached Manipur shortly.
