Bireshwar Majumdar

Darjeeling, West Bengal

August 31, 2022 to August 31, 2023

Bireshwar Majumdar was the Resident of Siliguri and an active Congress member. On 9 September 1942 a procession was held at Siliguri for the purpose of observing All India Independence Day according to the Congress Programme, and also for the protesting against the arrest of Congress leaders pursuing the present congress movement and activities. A Hartal was also held at Siliguri on that day, with the same objective in view, and was followed up by the procession and all the present incidents. During the parade, the Sub Divisional Officer and the Circle Inspector of the police tried to disperse the procession but in vain. At one stage, the procession was given a prejudicial lecture at Mahabirstan by Manmohan Ray. At another stage they raided a local higher education school and tried to persuade teachers and students to join the procession. Ultimately at about 4:30 pm the procession came over in front of the Thana and tried to force it into it. The S.D.O. and C.I. of Police with police staff (having some guns) warned them and they moved off for the time being to a local Girls' School a short way off. They came back again, leaving behind all the women members of the procession. They were now about 500 to 600 strong. Some of them broke the shed of the D.I. Fund Hat in front of the Thana and armed themselves with its posts etc. They tried to forcefully enter into the Thana. Bireswar Majumdar alone came into the Thana compound and asked the SDO to allow them all in, saying further they would hold a meeting in the Thana compound. The SDO refused. Just then, procession members began pelting stones at Thana and the police officers. Seven constables were injured in this stone pelting. Some stones also hit the hat of the SDO. The SDO ordered the armed constables to open fire. This was done and 12 rounds were fired. Two of the processionists died on the spot and two died in the Hospital. The other processionists who were injured by the gunshots were Potul Kumar Moitra, Hazariram Bania, Kartic Chandra alias Nripendranath Ghosh, Buddhu Goala, Mahadeo Prosad Bania, Bijli Kurmi, Jitendranath Das, Arun Kumar Gupta, Ananthachandra Das, Kaul Malla, Sukdeo Dhanuk, Jogendra Chandra Dutta, Lakkhi Kanta Karati, Jugdeo Mahato and Nirmal Bhushan Kar. Most of the accused were arrested from time to time. Arun Kumar Gupta, Nirmal Bhusha Kar, Kartic Alias Nripendranath, and Jatindranath Das were arrested at Jalpaiguri Hospital where they went over secretly to get themselves medically treated for their gunshot wound.
