Abinash Bhattacharyya

West Bengal

August 13, 2022 to August 13, 2023

A close associate of Aurobindo Ghosh, Abinash Bhattacharyya (1882-1962) was a frontline leader during the early revolutionary phase in Bengal. Born in the Arabelia village of the 24-Parganas, he passed the Entrance Examination from his village school, and then shifted to the Calcutta Metropolitan Institution in 1902.

In Calcutta, he came under the influence of Jatindranath Mukhopadhyay, alias Bagha Jatin, who inspired him to join the revolutionary movement; and introduced him to the leading revolutionaries of Calcutta including Aurobindo Ghosh. A year later, when the Yugantar was published as a revolutionary mouthpiece, Abinash was made its manager. He took it seriously and wrote two very useful books; Mukti Kon Pathe (Which way is liberation?) and Bartaman Rananiti (Contemporary War-techniques), and etc. for the revolutionaries.

In May 1909, exactly a year later after the arrest of Aurobindo Ghosh and others, he was arrested in connection with the Alipore Bomb Case. In the trial, he was transmigrated for life; but was later released in 1915. Back in Calcutta, he joined the Swarajya Party of C R Das and was devoted to writing articles and editing journals like Narayan, Bijali, Atmashakti, and Calcutta Municipal Gazette. He also authored a number of books in his later life.
