Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Gajanan, son of Gopinath Vithu Raikar, was born in the village of Kavle in Ponda taluka on 27 May 1935. Had a M.A degree with Hindi Sahityaratna. He was a teacher by profession, a member of the NCG(National Congress of Goa) and a leader of the Netarde and Saroli centers of the NCG(National Congress of Goa), and its last General Secretary. He worked for organising the NCG(National Congress of Goa) in Tiswadi and Ponda talukas and held extensive meetings. He was arrested in 1954 and imprisoned.

However, he escaped from Altinho jail in 1955. He was tried in absentia by the TMT(Tribunal Militar Territorial or Portuguese Military Tribunal) and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment; a prize of Rs. 10,000 was announced to anyone, who could trace him.

Gajanan worked to spread education. He participated in land tillers and youth agitations. After Liberation, he was elected a member of the Goa Legislative Assembly from Ponda constituency in the first Assembly elections. 

He was a noted poet and was instrumental in starting a few schools in Goa. He was awarded Tamrapatra by the Central Government. His associates were Shivaji Desai and Shivaji Sawant.
