Martyred at the age of twenty-one years, Anantahari(1904/5-1926) was the elder son of Ramlal and Panchanani Mitra of the Baaganchra village of Shantipore in Nadia district of West Bengal. A brilliant student, Anantahari had his early education in Chittagong, where his father was posted. After his Matriculation from Mymensingh, he shifted to Bangabasi College, Calcutta, for further studies.

In the wake of the non-cooperation movement, Anantahari left his studies and became a whole-time Congress worker, spinning Charkha, weaving and selling khaddar, and agitating for the boycott of foreign goods. With the growing repression, Anantahari joined the All-Bengal Revolutionary Party of Sachin Sanyal; and shifted to their Dakshineshwar hideout. In a late-night swoop at the place (10 November 1925), police arrested Pramodranjan Chaudhuri and Anantahari from there, along with a huge cache of revolver, ammunition, chemicals, and incriminating documents. Consequently, both were sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment.

Inside the Alipore Jail, Anantahari and his fellow inmate Pramodranjan Chaudhuri killed Bhupendranath Chatterjee with an iron rod. A Deputy Super in the intelligence branch of police, Bhupendranath frequently met revolutionaries in the jail to exact the names of their associates. Hence, he had to be removed. Five revolutionary prisoners claimed responsibility for the offense. Unable to fix the offender, the police arrested all of them. In the ensuing trial, Pramodranjan and Anantahari Mitra were sentenced to death, which was executed on 28 September 1926 in the Alipore Jail.
