July 29, 2022

Dhrubesh Charan(1904-1938), son of Pranabesh Chatterjee, was born in the Calcutta residence of his renowned grandfather, Madhabchandra Chattopadhyay, author of Bishuddha Sidhanta Panjika, the best Bengali almanac. After the premature death of his parents, he moved to his uncle’s house in Uttarpara, Hooghly; the place of his school and college education.

He was associated with Amarendranath Chattopadhyay’s Uttarpara Swadeshi Yuba Samiti; thus came in contact with Chittagong revolutionaries, who frequented Uttarpara from 1922-23. Dhurbesh began to visit their Dakshineshwar hideout and contributed the entire fund saved for his sister’s marriage to finance bomb manufacturing in Dakshineshwar. In a police raid (10 November 1925), he was arrested along with arms, chemicals, and unlawful documents. In the trial, he along with nine others was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment.

In the Alipore jail, he got involved in the murder of the intelligence inspector, Bhupen Chatterjee; and was sentenced to a life term with three others. From Alipore, he was taken to Mandalay and then to the Cellular Jail (1933) in the midst of a hunger strike agitation by the inmates. He was ultimately released in 1937, but had his health broken due to long imprisonment and died on 15 April 1938.
