Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Dattaram, son of Deu B. Desai was born at Cuncolim village of Salcete Taluka in South Goa District on 11 September 1930. He was educated up to SSC and joined the Azad Gomantak Dal in 1954. Since then, he worked as an underground worker. Along with other colleagues, he attacked the Cuncolim police station on 13 April 1955 and seized arms and ammunition from its armoury. He was about to be arrested on 30 June 1956 but managed to escape. Thereafter, he participated in the Daman Union Territory attacks in July 1958. He accompanied the Indian Army Battalion from Majali in Karwar District of Karnataka State to Margao city in South Goa during the liberation of Goa. He was awarded the Tamrapatra by the Central Government in 1973.
