Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

MathuradasTrikamji was the grandson of Mulibehn, the sister of Gandhi, and the son of Anandbehn. He was born on 31 August 1894 in Mumbai, he passed his B.A. in December 1914. He joined the Home Rule League in June 1917 as Annie Besant and her colleagues were under house arrest. He also joined as a representative in the first Gujarat Rajakiya Parishad held in Godhara in 1917. Gandhiji was the President of that Parishad. Henceforth Mathuradas became a close associate of Gandhiji. He compiled articles and speeches of Gandhiji and published them as Mahatma Gandhi Vicharshrushti which is considered to be one of the first compilations of Gandhian thoughts and writings. In the absence of Gandhiji’s Secretary, Mahadevbhai Desai, Mathuradas worked as his secretary in Mumbai. He accompanied Gandhi during his tour of Punjab in January-February 1920. He was a member of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation from 1923 to 1925. In 1930, Mathuradas was sent to jail when the meeting of the executive committee held in Mumbai was declared illegal and its members were arrested. He became the mayor of the Mumbai Congress Committee in 1940. He died on 6 July 1951.
