Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Born on 11 April 1892 in Mumbai, Mithubahen studied at St. Jesus and Mary Convent School, Colaba up to Sr. Cambridge. She joined the movement started by Gandhi to protest the Rowlatt Act in 1919. She was appointed as a secretary of the Khadi Department of All India Women’s Conference founded by Sarojini Naidu. She took part in Borsad Satyagraha in 1929 and stayed at the camp. She was active in the relief work during the floods of Gujarat in 1927, along with Ratanbahen Mehta and Bhaktiba Desai. During Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928, she moved from village to village to create awareness among the women. Having stayed with Kasturba during the Salt Satyagraha in 1930, she managed the camps after the arrest of Kasturba. During the civil disobedience movement, around 1,500 women of Surat District were picketing at the wine shops and the shops of foreign cloth under the leadership of Mithubahen, inspired by Gandhiji. She established the Kasturba Weaving School at Maroli on 30th December 1930 and Kasturba Sevashram in 1931. During the Civil Disobedience movement, she underwent imprisonment for four months. She died on 16 July 1973 at Surat.
