Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Bharati Devi Gogineni

Bharati Devi Gogineni was born at Machavaram in Bapatla taluq of the Guntur district.  She was a resident of Nidubrolu. She received her early education at ‘Sarada Niketan’, Guntur.  She went to England and studied at Ruskin School of Arts, Oxford in 1925-26. She organized ‘Women Satyagraha’ at Guntur, West Godavari, and Krishna district in 1931. During the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1932, she was sent to prison on 2 February 1932 for a year with a fine of Rs. 500.   She also organized “Harijan Day Celebrations” introducing Harijans to inter-caste marriages.  She was elected as a Member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council in 1958. Bharati Devi died on 27 September 1972.
