Jangi Lal was born in 1925 AD. He was born in Salempur village, under the Ara Sadar block of Bhojpur district. His father's name was Gopali Lal. His primary education was done in the upper primary school of the village itself. For secondary education, he was enrolled at Balua-Nargada High School.
At a very young age, during the Quit India movement, he jumped into the freedom movement on the call of Mahatma Gandhi. On September 12, 1942, he was uprooting railway tracks along with his seventy-two companions near Kaudiya village. The British had given the responsibility of protecting the railway line to the surrounding villagers. He was arrested along with his two other comrades, Haripal Dubey and Laxman Dubey, in the early morning of September 13, 1942, near Masadh village, in order to escape. A case was registered against all three at the Ara railway police station and sent to Ara jail. Sentenced to three years in this case, he was sent from Arrah Jail to Phulwari Sharif Camp Jail. In 1944 after serving a one-and-a-half-year sentence. He was freed from jail. After being released from jail, he passed the matriculation examination at Balua-Nargada High School.
After attaining independence, he initially worked as an assistant sub-inspector in the excise department. After 1958, he started doing business by staying in Tenughat, Jharkhand. On 9 July 1983 in Tenughat, Jharkhand, he died of a brain haemorrhage. His statue has been installed in Tenughat by the people there. That place is known as Freedom Fighter Jangi Lal Chowk.
