Bachan Ram Gairola

Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand

September 18, 2023 to September 18, 2024

Bachan Ram Gairola was born into a simple family in a Kandara village in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. He is the son of Atmaram Gairola. Bacchan Ram Gairola was an honest economist, politician, and social reformer who inspired society. Patriotism had been ingrained in him since childhood. After getting his primary education in the village itself, he went to the field for livelihood but went to Delhi to actively participate in the freedom movement. Bachan Ram Gairola's name is the highest on the list of great freedom fighters in Rudraprayag district in Uttrakhand. He is not only fighting for the freedom of the country but also against social evils. He had the privilege of working with the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. When Gandhiji used to go to clean the Harijan Basti with a broom in his hand, Bachan Ram was also there with him. Gandhiji's impression on him was such that even after coming to his village, he used to go to Harijan Basti alone to sweep. That’s why he added the word Arya in front of his name because his word is mostly used for Schedule Caste. Apart from this, Arya Ji continued his struggle against other social evils like child marriage and sacrifice.

After the country became independent, he came back to his village and started living permanently in Chandrapur in Rudraprayag district. On the country's independence day, Bachan Ram Gairola hoisted the flag in his Court Hardin district, in Rudraprayag's Kandara village. Due to police brutality, he got shot in the leg and became crippled for life.
