Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Umesh Chakravorty

Sonitpur, Assam

September 04, 2023 to September 04, 2024

Umesh Chakravorty was a resident of Golapara. He was a cultivator by profession. During the Quit India movement, incidents of cutting telegraph wire and railway lines increased rapidly. Considering the grave situation, the colonial government introduced forced labor in order to save the telegraph and railway lines along with their money. Forced labor was too much in vogue in 1942. Villagers living near the railway lines were compelled to guard the lines for more than a year. They were not given any remuneration, nor were they provided with clothes, lamps, or other necessary things. Even in the winter, people had to do this job while shivering for the whole night. People between the ages of 16 and 55 were requisitioned to do this work. It was done in rotation, and the next turn would generally come after a week or a fortnight. Needless to say, poor cultivators suffered a lot, as they could not very often work in the field in busy seasons after the whole night's vigilance. Special constables were made of villagers living near places where there was interference with railway lines or telegraphic wires. Umesh Chakravorty was also asked to guard the telegraph or railway lines, but he refused to do so. As a result, he was arrested. He was convicted and sent to jail for refusing to serve in this manner.
