Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Thuleswar Barua

Sonitpur, Assam

September 04, 2023 to September 04, 2024

Thuleswar Barua was a resident of Gohpur, Assam. Thuleswar Barua was a congressman. After the arrest of the top Congress leaders, including Gandhiji, in August 1942, a procession of congressmen proceeded towards the Gohpur Thana to hoist the national flag. Thuleswar Barua also participated in this procession with regard to the national leaders of the freedom movement. The procession arrived at Thana and requested the officer in charge to let them go in and hoist the national flag. But the officer in charge would not give in. Kanaklata said, “At least you allow us, the womenfolk, to go in. We will not create any trouble; we will simply hoist the flag and come out”. However the threat could not deter the people from their objective, and they went forward. Now the crowd got into a narrow spot, and turning back from the spot was not possible. Immediately, one gunshot was heard. There was no dispersal order. Rebati Shome, it transpires, gave the signal. The firing was done from a distance of 7/8 feet, and the guns were aimed right at the upper part of the body. Kanaklata fell when the first shot struck her in the chest. After a few minutes, there was another shot. This shot pierced Khargeswar Barua’s shoulder and smashed the head of Mukunda Kakati. Kanaklata died instantaneously. Mukunda did not die on the spot. According to Rampati, who could go inside the thana to hoist the flag, there were 20 coolies armed with lathis kept inside the thana, presumably to beat the people if such a necessity arose. In spite of firing, in spite of death and deadly wounds, Rampati Rajkhowa hoisted the flag over the Gohpur Thana. After that, all the people came out to honor the flag, come what may. In this firing, Thuleswar Barua was badly wounded by the gunshot.
