Tileswari Koch was a resident of Dhekiajuli, Assam, and an active congress member. After the arrest of Congress leaders in Mumbai in August 1942, Pushpa Das of Tezpur presided over a meeting at Boragoan under Dhekiajuli police station attended by 300 persons and asked them to go to the police station in hundreds in a procession and to request the government servants to resign their jobs. She also asked to capture arms and ammunition at first and to hoist the Congress flag at the police station on September 20. As a result of her appeal, on September 20, 1942, a procession of about 5 to 6 thousand people came to Dhekiajuli from Chatia, Barbil, Naharbari, Jahamari, etc. to hoist the national flag over the police station there. The officer in charge of the station, Mohikanta Bora, kept 8 armed police and 6 civil constables with lathi. The armed police were arranged in two files. When the procession arrived near the gate of the thana, the office in charge came out of the thana and asked the leaders, Kamala Kanta Das and Panidhar Das, about the purpose of the procession. When they said it was to hoist the national flag, the officer in charge said he could not allow the crowd to enter the station compound. All of a sudden, Mohikanta Bora ordered the Lathi charge to be made. The leaders asked the crowd to remain non-violent and die like heroes. The crowd advanced towards the gate. The armed police were brought forward and set face-to-face with the crowd. In the meantime, Manbar Nath and Golok Neog entered the Thana compound and hoisted the flag. Immediately, gunfire roared out. Manbar received a bullet wound and was thrown out on the street. When this happened, Golok’s mother, out of affection for her son, went forward and tried to shield him. In this state, she received a bullet and fell down. The crowd began dispersing, but all sides except the east were blocked, so they ran in that direction. On that side, there was a bridge, but as it was hurdled by a rope, people running for their lives toppled down on the bridge, and it was at this stage that Mymensinghi came out of their concealment and began the dastardly act of beating and fleeing the people. They pursued the people for a mile and belaboured whomever they found on their way, especially the wounded and the women mercilessly. Because Commandant Finch said to Mymensingh, “Hindus want independence, and you want Pakistan. Now is the opportunity. Beat the volunteers wherever you find them”. Armed police chased the crowd and fired at them at random from a distance of a quarter mile. About 29 rounds were fired in all. Tileswari Koch was also part of this procession. Tileswari Koch received a bullet, but Mymensingh beat her, and she was carried back by Nandiram Bhuyan. She died because of injuries received during the firing and became a martyr for the cause of the independence of India.
