Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Sailendra Nath Saikia was the son of Late Dhaniram. Saikia was a resident of village Jamuguri, P.O. Badati, in Lakhimpur district, Assam. He joined Congress during his student life, and subsequently, he took active part in the freedom movement in India during 1942. Consequently, he gave up his studies forever. He was arrested twice and confined in jail for about six months, including four months of rigorous imprisonment, and served as an underground worker in the Dhakuakhana police thana area. After the movement, he had been taking an active part in different development and relief works. He was arrested on January 30, 1943, by the Bihpuria police station, admitted to the north Lakhimpur jail as a trial prisoner on January 31, 1943, under Section 436 of the Indian Penal Code, and acquitted on March 10, 1943. He was again arrested by the Bihpuria police station on June 25, 1943, and admitted as an under-trial prisoner on June 26, 1943, under Section 56(a) of the Defense of Indio Rule. He was convicted on July 8, 1943, of four months of rigorous imprisonment. He was also fined Rs 60 by the then Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
