Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Padmni Barua was a resident of Sootea in the Darrang District. She joined the Congress movement. The minds of the people of Sootia were agitated on August 9, when Mahatma Gandhi was arrested. On that night, the telegram wires were displaced by the public, and for this, four teachers and 10 students of Sootia High School were arrested. From this time on, the 1942 Movement took a tremendous turn at Sootia. A strong Mahila Mrityu Bahini was organized by Shrimati Swarna Prava Manhattan at Sootea. She acknowledged the inspiration of Subhash Bose. Hundreds of volunteers, including women, joined Shanti Sewa and Mrityu Bahini. Meetings and processions were organized everywhere. On the appeals of these organizations, the students of Sootia took an eminent part in this movement. Even police officers and government servants cooperated with the public in this movement. Students boycotted the schools. Village panchayats were organized everywhere. The people boycotted the government court and came to the village panchayats for the decision of their cases. The Santi Seya Bahini began to guard the villages. Padmini Barua was arrested and imprisoned for her role in the Quit India movement.
