Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Pandit Lingaraj Mishra was born in 1894 in Sriramchandrapur village of Sakhigopal police station of Puri district. He was the son of Pandit Nilakantha Mishra, an eminent Sanskrit scholar. Though born into a poor family he showed signs of brilliance in himself in his childhood days when he passed a minor examination with a scholarship in 1908. Thereafter he completed the Entrance examination successfully at Puri Zilla School and B.A. from Ravenshaw College. In 1918, he passed his M.A. in Sanskrit from Calcutta University with first class and a gold medal. His study in Calcutta was possible due to Madhusudan Das who sent him Rs 30 every month for his maintenance. After completing his post-graduation he received an offer of Assistant Superintendent of Bihar Orissa Sanskrit Association, but he chose to join Satyabadi National School on request by Gopabandhu Das on a monthly salary of Rs 30 in 1921. As a part of Gopandhu’s freedom struggle program, he joined Servants of Peoples Society in 1927 and after his death, he became the editor of ‘The Samaj’ which was spreading the message of independence. He was the editor of ‘The Samaj’ from 1930 to 1942. In 1930 he joined the Salt Satyagraha and was imprisoned. After his release, he again continued his mission in the ‘The Samaj’ for which he was arrested again in 1932. After his release in 1934, he worked for the spread of Hindi in Odisha and the Harijan Welfare program of Congress. In 1940, he was arrested for joining the ‘Bani Satyagraha program. Again he was arrested in 1942 for joining the Quit India Movement. He was released in 1944. In 1946, he was elected to State’s Legislative Assembly on a Congress ticket and became the Minister of Health, Education, and Local self-government under the prime ministership of Harekrushna Mahatab. He founded the Gopabandhu Ayurvedic College in Puri. In 1952, he was elected to Lok Sabha from the Puri constituency and to Rajya Sabha in 1957. He died on 18 December 1957.
