Bhavnagar, Gujarat

April 03, 2023 to April 03, 2024

Amritlal Vitthaldas Thakkar (Thakkarbapa) was born in 1869 and in 1899 he took a position as a railway engineer. After that, he started working at Mumbai Sudrai as an engineer. The moment he witnessed a Harijan throwing human feces over his own head, he felt a jolt in his spirit and from that moment on, the course of his life began to shift. Amritlal committed himself to work in an effort to better the status of Harijans in society. In 1909, he became a member of the Depressed Classes Mission, and four years later, in 1914, he became a member of the Hind Sevak Samaj (Servants of India Society). People who were impacted by the drought died as a result of it in Uttar Pradesh and Panchmahal. While he was still residing in Panchmahal in 1922, he joined the 'Bhil Seva Mandal' and became interested in the day-to-day activities of the local tribal people. The government of Bombay established a committee in 1928 with the mission of investigating the living conditions of Harijans and members of scheduled castes. The committee also selected members for the committee and compiled an informative report. In 1926, at the time that the session of the Bhavnagar Praja Parishad was being held in Mahuva, he was elected as the president of the organization, and he continued to fight against the injustices that were perpetrated by the British. Gandhiji nominated Thakkarbapa to serve as president of the Kathiawar Political Conference at its fourth session, which took place in Porbandar in 1928. The success of the conference can be attributed to the presence in Porbandar of leaders from all across the country. In 1929, he was an integral part of the investigation that the Rajasthan Praja Parishad conducted into the 'rape of the Maharaja of Patiala' case. After being subjected to terrible atrocities by the British government in 1930 during the Salt Satyagraha, he began an investigation at the advice of Gandhiji, which resulted in his being jailed by the government. After having served fifteen days in jail, he was finally allowed to go free. In 1932, when the Akhil Hind Harijan Sevak Sangh was first established, he was chosen to serve as the organization's minister. A committee on the welfare of tribal communities has been established by the governments of Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. Thakkar Bapa served as the committee’s chairman. He conducted research and proposed some useful social programs. The "Adim Jati Sevak Sangh" was established by him in the year 1949. He was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly that was convened to frame the Constitution of India, and he worked hard to incorporate articles in the Constitution that protected the interests of India's backward classes and primitive castes. Throughout his whole life, he stayed involved in efforts that sought to ease the pain of those who were exploited or victims of abuse. He finished his life journey as a protector of the needy, despite the fact that he chose to live a destitute lifestyle on purpose. The Indian government recently held celebrations to mark its 80th birthday. He passed away on 19 January 1951 at Bhavnagar.
