Rameshwari Nehru was born on December 10, 1886, in Lahore. She belonged to a well-known Kashmiri Brahmin family, which was moved to Punjab during Ranjit Singh. She married Brij Lal Nehru, a nephew of Motilal Nehru and a cousin of Jwaharla Nehru in 1902. She worked as an Editor of a Hindi magazine, Istri Darpan from 1909-1924. In 1923, she went to England to attend a conference to solve women’s problems. She was one of the founders of the All India Women’s Conference. She took social constructive works as a priority during the National Movement of India. She attended “The League of Nations” as an Indian representative in 1924. She did a lot of work for the removal of untouchability and to improve the conditions of Scheduled castes in society, thus coming in close contact with Mahatma Gandhi. She became the President of the All India Women’s Conference in 1940. She offered herself as a Satyagrahi for Individual Satyagraha which was launched by Mahatma Gandhi against the decision of involving India in the Second World War without its consent. But Gandhi wanted her to remain sidelined from the front of war so that construction work could carry on. She worked for communal harmony during Muslim- Hindu riots in Sindh and Multan. During the Quit India Movement, She was appointed as the second Dictator of the Punjab Provincial Congress Committee. She motivated women to join the movement and fulfill their duties toward the nation. She was arrested three times after short intervals throughout the movement. After independence, she worked for the refugees in Delhi. She actively participated in the works for the upliftment of women and Harijans in society till her death on November 8, 1966.
