Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters

Pandit Rambhaj Dutt Choudhry

Pandit Rambhaj Dutt was born in a Brahim family of village Kanjrur, district Narowal, Punjab, Pakistan on February 26, 1866. His father’s name was Radha Krishan Dutt. After his law degree, he started practicing in the High Court, Lahore. He was one of the founding members of the Indian National Congress and attended all the sessions of Congress till his death. He had a close association with the revolutionaries of Punjab such as Sardar Ajit Singh, Lala Lajpat Rai, Lala Harkrisan Lal, and Master Amir Chand. He remained active throughout the freedom struggle of the country. He got married to the nephew of Rabinder Lal Tagore, Sarala Devi in 1905. Sarala Devi was the first woman leader of Punjab who was against British rule in India. Rambhuj and his wife Sarala Devi became followers of Mahatma Gandhi in 1919. Rambhuj was arrested under Defence of India Rule after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and his property were confiscated by the British government. He was released by the Secretary of State, Montague, to create a peaceful atmosphere for the introduction of his scheme. He and his wife did selfless service to the nation. He died on August 6, 1923, in Mussoorie.
