January 17, 2023 to January 17, 2024

Maulvi Syed Allauddin alias Syed Allauddin Hyder was the son of Hafizullah, born in 1824 in the Nalgonda district of present-day Telangana State. He was a resident of Hyderabad of Andhra Pradesh. He was a preacher and Imam of Makkah (Mecca) Masjid, Hyderabad. He became one of the leaders of the rebels of the First War of Independence in 1857. Turrebaz Khan’s nickname ‘Turum Khan’ in Dakhani Urdu to this day is synonymous with courage and valor.

He took part in the revolt by organizing an armed force of about 500 Rohillas and Arabs in association with Turrebaaz Khan. He decided to attack the British Forces when the British arrested Zamindar Chedda Khan and locked him in the Residency building of Hyderabad. On 17 July 1857 after the Namaz, Maulvi Allauddin along with his friend Turrebaz Khan and about 500 other freedom fighters attacked the British Residency Building.

It was the first such open revolt against the British and their ally Nizam of Hyderabad which took place on 17 July 1857 in Hyderabad. Turrebaaz Khan and his follower Maulvi Alauddin made an attack on the Residency, Cuthbert Davidson. The Rohilla soldiers were assembled first at Mecca Masjid. They expressed their support to Chiddakhan, the hero of the revolt at Buldhan. Nizam of Hyderabad rejected the plea of ‘Chiddakhan and his followers. The Nizam also announced three thousand inseam (prize money) to those who could catch the rebel Chiddakhan. Nizam Afzal-ud-Daula and his Diwan Salar Jung expressed solid faith in the British and mercilessly crushed the heroic revolt of Turrebaaz khan and his followers. Turrebaaz was shot dead by Nizam’s army when he tried to escape near Toopran in 1859. This is the first historic patriotic act of Turrebaaz Khan against a foreign power in Nizam’s State. At present, a memorial has been erected for this forgotten hero near Koti Bus stand, Hyderabad, and a stretch of road from Koti Women’s College to Pulti Bowli Crossing Road.

Maulvi Allauddin was sentenced on 25 August 1859 to transportation for life and deported to the Andaman Islands on 22 January 1860. He was allotted Convict No. 3807. He took his last breath in Andaman in detention in 1884.
