The Embassy of India in Paramaribo celebrated the Makar Sankranti festival at the official residence (Bharat Bhavan) of the Ambassador on 14 January 2022.
The program began with a Pooja to Suryadev (Sun God), set in the midst of a beautiful rangolis (a traditional decoration on the floor). This was followed by a distribution of sweet Pongal (a rice preparation) as Prasad (offering to God), vegetarian lunch, and a Kite flying. Ambassador Shankar Balachandran then presented prizes to Mrs. Sharmila Jayakumar, Mrs. Shweta Shetty, and Ms. Wirisha Girirajsingh, the winners of the online competition on Rangoli. Over 50 people from the Indian diaspora, the visiting Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Team including the Embassy officials and family members attended the event.
