Bodhram Dubey

Jharsuguda, Odisha

October 28, 2022 to October 28, 2023

Bodhram Dubey was born in 1894 in the Jharsuguda district of Orissa. Bodhram was actively involved in the Indian freedom struggle and was also a member of the Congress Party. He became a member of the First Congress Ministry (1937-1939) and was in charge of Education under the Premiership of Bishwanath Das till 04 November 1939.

It was Bodhram Dubey’s ministry that introduced the basic system of education as per the recommendations of the Zakir Hussain Committee and the Committee constituted by the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE). This was done to encourage the spirit of self-reliance in young children in Orissa. Under Dubey’s tenure as the Education Minister, the number of students enrolled in primary schools increased from 279924 to 2869201 and that in secondary schools from 30427 to 34587. The ministry eventually resigned on 03 September in protest against the arbitrary decision of the British administration that forced British India to join World War II without consulting the Congress Party.

When a Harijan temple was constructed at Pandupathar in Jharsuguda police station, Bodhram Dubey attended the opening ceremony where the National Flag was hoisted. Dubey also visited Jharsuguda in June 1938 and urged the people to keep in view the goal of complete Independence from the British. On 1 December 1940, the Congress party of Orissa began the Individual Civil Disobedience Movement. He joined the movement and was eventually arrested.

Subsequently, Dubey became a member of the Rajya Sabha. He also served as the Standing Councillor of the Orissa government. Bodhram Dubey was a great nationalist, a true freedom fighter, and had a tremendous zeal for meaningful education.
