Jamnagar, Gujarat

October 04, 2022

Dr. Jayanti Thakor was born on 4 March 1913 in Lalpur village of Jamnagar district.  He became a nationalist at the young age of 17 and went to Dharasana to join the Satyagraha, where he was beaten badly by the police. He then joined the Satyagraha of Dhandhuka and Dholera and was subjected to similar police brutalities. He joined the Dandi march from Sabarmati to Aslali. After the public address at the first halt, Gandhi ordered all those who accompanied him to return. He returned and converted the Khadiya Sarvajanik Vyayamshala into ‘Ahmedabad Vanarsena’ on 13 March 1930. He trained more than 1800 ‘Vanars (volunteers) for a month continuously. The Vanarsena did several activities, like distributing the pamphlets of Congress, picketing at the shops selling foreign clothes, and flag hoisting at the government buildings. A program of flag hoisting in R.C.High School was arranged. He took the lead in the procession and ignored the order of a ban on the procession. He was arrested and sentenced to imprisonment of seven and a half months.

He passed his matriculation in 1931 and appeared for the interview to join the B.J.Medical College. He succeeded in the admission test but went for picketing at a winery and was again sent to jail. He was arrested on 9 August 1942 at Mumbai Railway station. He jumped from the running train and disappeared into the city. Jayantibhai ceaselessly worked for the August Kranti movement in Ahmedabad and served as its executive.  On 5 August 1942, the distribution of the ‘Rajdroh’ pamphlet was started. It was replaced by ‘Congress Patrika’ on 16 August 1942. He issued orders under the name ‘Shahersuba Jayanand’. He was engaged with Naturopathy in the later period of his life.
