Piyoli Phukan, son of Badan Barphukan was a martyr who attempted to liberate the country from the clutches of foreign control in 1830.

In 1830, Piyoli Phukan along with several ex-nobles and tribes, including the Nagas, Khasis, Khamtis, and Singphos, joined their forces to fight against the British. The forces simultaneously attacked the British camps which were situated on the banks of the river Dikhou in Assam. In places like Nazira and Dikhoumukh, the British forces were overwhelmed with their houses getting destroyed in the former and their boats sunk. However, unfortunately, the British received news from secret agents which put them on guard in Rangpur. The attack was successfully repulsed by them and Piyoli Phukan fell into their hands. Piyoli Phukan along with Jiuram Dulia Barua was tried and found guilty by the Commissioner of Assam, David Scott. They were sentenced to death by hanging in Sivasagar district in the state of Assam on August 1830.

In 1955, the movie Piyoli Phukan, based on his life was released. It was directed by Phani Sharma who received the Certificate of Merit. It was the first Assamese movie to win the National Award.
