Kolkata, West Bengal

August 02, 2022

Son of Lieutenant S C Nandy of the Indian Army Medical Service, Indranath Nandy(1885 - ?) was born in Calcutta; beyond which nothing is known about his early life and education; although he ended up in the Presidency College.

In 1905, when the Bengalis en masse came down to the street opposing the partition, with the tune of Tagore’s song; he also followed the suit; and joined the Atmonnati Samity, the precursor of Yugantar founded by Nibaran Bhattacharyya in Calcutta. Inspired by Swadeshi ideology, Indranath in association with his friends founded Chhatra Bhander (Students’ Store) to sell indigenous goods during the boycott movement.

Revolutionary Bhupendranath Datta wrote about how Indranath and his friends tried to propagate the ideas of nationalism and freedom from British rule in Bihar, by holding meetings in the village using a magic lantern at night to draw crowds. When a communal clash broke out in Jamalpur near Dhaka, they went there to stop it; but were taken into police custody.

Back in Calcutta, Indranath was arrested in the Alipore Bomb Case and sentenced to life imprisonment; but was later released by the High Court. He lost one of his hands while making a bomb in his house; his neighbors did not disclose it to the police.
