Durga Devi

Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh

April 24, 2024 to April 24, 2026

Born in 1910 in Sandila, Hardoi district, Durga Devi was the daughter of Late Mhangu Prasad and Nikai Devi. Married to Shri Ram Narayana Singh, she found her inspiration in Mahatma Gandhi's ideology and actively participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1930, aiming to liberate India from the shackles of colonialism.

Durga Devi, hailing from Salarganj, Behraich, became a pioneer in the movement by advocating Gandhi ji's principles of self-reliance and non-violence. At the tender age of 20, she dedicated herself to the service of the nation, rallying fellow activists like Kamla Devi and Gulabaraji. Their tireless efforts, including door-to-door campaigns, galvanized the youth of Bahrain.

However, the British authorities, alarmed by their activities, arrested Durga Devi and her comrades on February 6, 1932. Despite facing severe torture, they remained resolute and were sentenced to four months in jail, along with a fine of 50 rupees. Durga Devi, unable to pay the fine, endured an additional month of strict imprisonment in Behraich Jail.

In recognition of her significant contribution to the freedom struggle, Chief Minister. Kamlapati Tripathi honored her with a (Tamra Patra) on behalf of the State in 1972.

Durga Devi passed away on 30 November 1982.

Tamra Patra was awarded by the State Govt. in 1972.
