Sudhir Kumar Sarkar

Kolkata, West Bengal

February 27, 2024 to February 27, 2025

Sudhir Kumar Sarkar was a part of the revolutionary secret societies that formed the vanguard of India’s independence movement. Guided and aided by intellectuals and spiritual stalwarts like Aurobindo Ghosh and Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the nationalist movement sounded the bugle for independence from oppressive British rule.

Sudhir Kumar Sarkar studied at the Khulna Zilla School till the age of 16 years. He left the school for two reasons, first because of the Swadeshi agitation, and second, because he failed in two subjects in a school examination. His father sent him to Sahibganj to his brother Narendra Kumar Sarkar, who was an assistant jailor at Bhagalpur. His father wished him either to get employment at the University or continue his studies. He had no intention to learn at Calcutta University or to get official employment. He, therefore, left his brother after about 15 days and went to Calcutta and became acquainted with Barindra Kumar Ghosh. He met Barindra at the Jugantar office at 41 Champatola 1st Lane. He assisted him in publishing the newspaper. Barindra took him to the Khulna by saying that there was a mission for religion and self-abnegation and political purposes. His main intention was to serve the motherland and to serve the people.

All the above statements of Sudhir Kumar Sarkar, made before L. Birley, Magistrate, Alipore, on 11 May 1908, he was only 18 years old at that time. He played an important role in the Alipore Bomb Case.
