Chaudhary Charan Singh

Meerut, Uttar Pradesh

December 20, 2023 to December 20, 2024

Chaudhary Charan Singh, born on December 23, 1902, hailed from Noorpur village in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. His father, Chaudhary Mir Singh, worked as a farmer. The lineage of Chaudhary Charan Singh can betraced back to Raja Nahar Singh of Ballabhgarh, who played a significant role in the 1857 revolution. Raja Nahar Singh met his demise by hanging in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Chaudhary Charan Singh's ancestors had settled in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh.

Following the Lahore session of the Congress, Chaudhary Charan Singh established the Congress Committee in Ghaziabad in 1929 and actively joined the freedom struggle. He received a six-month prison sentence for breaking the salt law during the Salt Satyagraha movement in 1930. In 1940, he participated in the individual Satyagraha led by Gandhi and was subsequently arrested. Chaudhary Charan Singh regained his freedom in October 1941. In 1942, during the tumultuous period of widespread discontent across the country, Mahatma Gandhi called for the "do or die" Quit India movement.

Chaudhary Charan Singh went underground and clandestinely formed a revolutionary organization, operating covertly in villages such as Ghaziabad, Meerut, Hapur, Mawana, Sardhana, and Bulandshahr. Pursued by the police, Chaudhary Charan Singh was eventually apprehended, resulting in a two-year prison sentence imposed by the British government. While incarcerated, he authored a book titled Shishtachaar (Ethics). Chaudhary Charan Singh passed away on May 29, 1987. To commemorate his contributions, the government issued a postage stamp in his honour.
