Nadia, West Bengal

July 12, 2023 to July 12, 2024

Gopinath Majumder, son of Srish Chandra Majumder, was born on 9 October 1909 in the Krishnanagar City of Nadia District. He completed his Matriculation Examination at Krishnanagar Collegiate School and pursued his higher education at Krishnanagar Government College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours in English. He further obtained a Master of Arts Degree in English Literature from Calcutta University.

He was influenced by his mother Shailabala Devi, who instilled a sense of protest against oppression and actively participated in the freedom movement while still he was a student. In 1930, he actively participated in the civil disobedience movement and was arrested while picketing in front of Krishnanagar Government College. He spent about 45 days in Krishnanagar Jail before being released. After his release, he continued to play a leading role in the anti-British activities.

Gopinath actively opposed British authority by engaging in freedom movements. Leading to his arrest on 7 January 1932 he was imprisoned as a political detainee in Krishnanagar Jail before being transferred to the notorious "Buxa Detention Camp" in August 1935. He remained in Buxa Jail for a considerable period and was later interned in Devidwar, Comilla, Tripura and finally Shukchar under Khardah Police Station for about two years. During his internment, he clandestinely maintained contact with revolutionaries and worked to ignite the anger of the people against British rule.

In 1942, the Quit India movement was initiated nationwide following Gandhi's call and Gopinath actively participated in it. Due to involvement in the movement, he was arrested on 7 April 1943. After his release from jail, he engaged in social activities. The government of India honoured him with a Tamra Patra in 1972.

Gopinath Majumder passed away in 1985.
