Non-Cooperation Movement at Kheda

Kheda (Nadiad), Gujarat

June 07, 2023 to June 07, 2024

Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation movement, launched in 1920, resonated across India, including the Kheda district in Gujarat, symbolising the unity and determination of the people in their fight for independence.

As per the Congress programme, the Kheda District Samiti was established, with Abbas Tyabji as the president and Fhulchandbhai Shah as the Secretary. Under Mahatma Gandhi's guidance, khadi spinning was initiated in Vasu by Rajvi Bhai Patel, who later spread awareness in the Badlapur region of the Borsad tehsil. Khadi work was also started in Sojitra by Ramabhai Patel and Ravjibhai Nathabhai Patel. The promotion of spinning khadi and charkha was undertaken by leaders to raise awareness about the Non-Cooperation movement. On 8th March 1921, the district collector of Nadiad issued a notice to the municipality for the handover of three school buildings, but the municipality defied the orders. Consequently, the collector had to involve the police to acquire possession of the buildings. Gandhi described this act as "unjust, illegal, insolent, and akin to robbery" in a meeting held on March 14th. On April 21st, Gandhi and Vallabhbhai Patel visited the Borsad and Valsad, where activities like picketing of foreign clothes were carried out by the masses.

The Non- Cooperation movement stood out for its exceptional display of collaboration among various segments of the society, as they actively participated against the yoke of colonialism.
