- Kunjiraman Nair, popularly known as Mahakavi P, was a pioneer of Malayalam writing. He was a libertarian in life by traditional standards, but he transformed that lawlessness into artistic richness. He came from Kasargod in Kerala. The main themes of his poetry are nature, love, and devotion to God. His poetry is brimming with the exquisite and bittersweet nostalgia of the expatriate. He was possibly the first Malayalam poet to employ abstract imagery.
Even after composing a thousand poems in protest, his moral anger persisted. Narabali is a masterpiece of vehement anti-exploitation. P. has written several plays of his own. Veeraradhana (Hero Worship) is another drama about the Raja of Pazhassi's fight with the British. P. wanted to communicate his pride in Indian culture as well as his wrath of British colonial invaders through this play. The essence of the drama is captured in the Raja's conversation with British Commander Lord Wellesley.
He imagined an India firmly founded in enlightenment and personal integrity, devoid of religious and caste strife and oppressive imperialism. This served as the inspiration for his patriotic lyrics. His poetry is dominated by sensuality, joy, and personality.
