Arun Kumar Chanda ( 1899- 1947) played a major role in the national movement attracting the masses to the struggle. He was instrumental in setting up of Guru Charan College of Silchar in 1935. He worked for the empowerment of the weaker section of society. Chanda was also very active in the Trade Union movement of Assam. He was elected the first President of the Provincial Trade Union Congress. In 1937 he was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly and in 1945 to the Indian Legislative Assembly. He was also an accomplished writer, formulating opinion through the Bengali weekly Saptak.
