Martial law at Pargana Chail situated in the Prayagraj (Allahabad) district of the state of Uttar Pradesh was proclaimed in the wake of the Uprising of 1857.
In a letter written by M. H. Court to the commissioner of Allahabad division, the nature of the great revolt was highlighted while stating that the extent of the uprising was greater in the region as compared to other provinces. In order to tackle the situation, he, being the magistrate and collector of Allahabad, proclaimed martial law in the Pargana Chail. He said, “…this law, though terrible to mutineers, was for their especial protection”. He suggested the freedom fighters return to their homes and professions.
The great revolt in Allahabad and the subsequent martial law was a significant event in the history of the freedom struggle. The struggle stood as a symbol of defiance against British rule and inspired the future course of freedom struggle India.
