Bangalore Fort

Bengaluru (Bangalore) Urban, Karnataka

May 29, 2023 to May 29, 2024

Bangalore Fort, popularly known as Tipu Sultan’s Fort, is located in the Bangalore district of the state of Karnataka which is evidence of the struggle of The Mysore Empire against the Britishers. It was initially built as a mud fort by Kempe Gowda but was later converted into a stone fort.

The Third Anglo-Mysore War took place between Mysore kingdom led by the Commandant Bahadur Khan and the East India Company led by Lord Marquess Cornwallis in 1791. The British contingent breached Tipu Sultan’s fort through the Delhi gate, they captured the fort using ladders after defeating Tipu Sultan’s army. There were casualties on both sides but after Bahadur Khan’s death, his army lost miserably. Lord Cornwallis used the Bangalore fort for sieging Tipu Sultan’s capital in 1792 and forced him to comply with the situation. After a year they returned the fort to Tipu Sultan but captured it again in 1799 after his demise. There is an old dungeon in the fort which was used for housing and capturing of the British men. Dargahs of Tipu Sultan’s loyal men were built surrounding the fort and cenotaph of the British soldiers was built opposite the newly constructed building. Only 5% of Bangalore fort is left as of now except for a wall plaque that reads, “Through this breach, the British assault was delivered. March 21, 1791.”  Several other structures of the fort were destroyed, and the property remains were used by the colonials in building the Victoria hospital, Minto hospital and Town Hall.

Thus, the Bangalore fort accounts as a historic site during the reign of Tipu Sultan which clearly captures his dedicated spirit for attaining freedom for his countrymen.
