The first Nupi Lan, 1904

Imphal West, Manipur

May 15, 2023

The First Nupi Lan (which translates into Women's War) was a significant revolt led by women in the Imphal West district of Manipur. It was one of the earliest uprisings in India to be led entirely by women.

The cause of the rebellion was the reintroduction of the Lallup system by Colonel Maxwell in July 1904, which required men to perform ten days of free labor after every 30 days. Maxwell had temporarily reintroduced the Lallup System after the bungalows of two British officials were burned down, leading to widespread protests against forced labor. On 3rd September 1904, thousands of women marched to Maxwell's official residence, demanding that the orders to reintroduce the Lallup system be taken down. The British authorities promised to retract the orders, but their promises were in vain. This triggered another meeting of around 5,000 women at Khwairamband Bazar on 5th October to protest and demand the abolition of the Lallup system. The British tried to violently suppress the protest, but the women continued their protest with great enthusiasm. Ultimately, the British had to retract the orders and rebuild the bungalows at their own expense.

This revolt sparked many more women-led uprisings in Manipur. The most significant among them was the Second Nupi Lan, which took place in 1939. 12th December, the day of the Second Nupi Lan, is commemorated as Nupi Lan Day.
