Quit India Movement in Moradabad, 1942

Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh

May 10, 2023

The Quit India Movement, which aimed to end British colonial rule in India, was marked by a significant level of violence in some parts of the country, including the Moradabad district. On August 11th, 1942, a massive procession of around 40,000 people was on its way to the district court when the local police resorted to firing at the crowd to control it. However, the situation quickly went out of control, and the British military was called in to handle the protest.

The military's intervention led to the deaths of 15 people and injuries to 50 others, while 154 people were arrested and charged with various offences, with total fines amounting to Rs 17,397. The next day, an enraged mob attacked and looted Moradabad's Railway Station and booking office, an act of retaliation against the British government's brutal actions. Unfortunately, Kailash Chandra, a British government employee who had reported the events truthfully, was fired for revealing the colonial government's atrocities, further highlighting the suppression of dissent and free speech during that time.

Despite the violent turn of events during the Quit India Movement, the people of Moradabad district displayed incredible courage and bravery by participating in large numbers, highlighting their determination to fight for their freedom and independence from British colonial rule.
