The Borsad Satyagraha of 1923

Anand, Gujarat

May 08, 2023

The Borsad Satyagraha was observed under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the present district of Anand, Gujarat in 1923. The Satyagraha was in opposition to the punitive tax of over Rs 2.40 lakhs imposed on villages in the Anand district of Gujarat on the pretext of the police force providing protection from two dacoits of that area – Babar Deva and Ali.

While Mahatma Gandhi was in jail, Sardar Patel and his associates uncovered evidence that the police worked in consonance with the local dacoits in Borsad taluka and got a share from the booty while the government was preparing to impose a huge tax to fight dacoity in the area. Over 6000 people gathered to listen to Patel and all of them supported his decision to begin a Satyagraha against the government unconditionally. Patel organised hundreds of Congressmen from across the district, sent instructions, and received information. One of the local organisations which played a significant role in the Satyagraha was the Prantik Samiti which assisted the entire movement in the district. After a long struggle, the Government withdrew the tax. Finally, on the 8th of January 1924, the government abolished the additional tax collected all these while and decided to return them all to the concerned people.

After succeeding in the Borsad Satyagraha in 1924, Patel addressed the local people and exhorted them to face all government pressure in unison as that was the only way to counter the oppressive measures of the colonial power.
