Criminalisation of Tribes by the British Government in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Rajasthan

May 03, 2023 to May 03, 2024

The Baori and Meena are the two most important tribes in Rajasthan that inhabit the areas in and around Jaipur. These communities faced trials and tribulations after the First War of Independence in 1857 too. The colonial administration was suspicious of these tribal communities for being involved in unsettling activities against the British administration.

The British, for their commercial benefits, had started interfering in the natural habitat of the tribes, to control and regulate whom, they came up with the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871. According to the provisions of the Act, a person with an ancestor who had a criminal charge against them, was classified as a criminal for a lifetime. There were a number of tribal groups in Jaipur that were classified under the Act. Excessive encroachment on part of the British led these tribes to rise in rebellion against them. The tribes, such as the Meenas in Jaipur, actively revolted against the growing influence of colonial power in the region; Not only that, they also attacked the British officers stationed in the region. The massacre of these colonial officials created fear in the British administrative circles, which in turn led to the hanging of two people from the Meena tribe, involved in the incident.

The main reason behind the criminalization of tribes such as the Meenas and Baoris was that they were resistant to the attempts of the Britishers to control them. However, the colonial administration could not stop these tribes from fighting for the cause of their rights and the larger cause of freedom.
