British Attack at Salempur, 1858

Deoria, Uttar Pradesh

May 03, 2023 to May 03, 2024

The stories of the atrocities committed by the British on the Indian natives in the wake of the 1857 rebellion were largely undocumented to keep the public pressure at bay. During the 1857 rebellion, the colonial administration was facing the double attack by the soldiers from nearby garrisons and the uprising of zamindars against the British establishment in the present-day Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh. The rebellion continued till 1858 until the British forces sent troops to suppress the revolt.

In the summer of 1857, as the news of the rising by the native soldiers in nearby Azamgarh and Sugauli spread in the city, large zamindaris of the region, like those under the Rajas of Paina, Tamukhi, Satasi, and Narharpur started their resistance against the British rule. As the Zamindars of Paina took control of the river Ghaghra and plundered government supplies, it threatened the establishment of their logistics. At the same time, Narharpur Raja and his followers drove the police and liberated many prisoners from jail.

The British responded by sending the military led by Commanding Officer Rowcroft to crush such rebellions by use of brute force in early 1858. Many freedom fighters were captured and punished severely in the Salempur area, while the properties of rebel zamindars were destroyed.
