Amritlal Hazra

North 24 Parganas, West Bengal

April 26, 2023

Born on January 1, 1886, in Srinagar village under Bikrampur Pargana, Bangladesh, Amritlal went by many names, including Sasanka Shekhar Hazra, and Kalipada Basu. He was the son of Dr. Kalicharan Hazra of Dacca Medical College.

As a child, Amritlal was skilled in repairing tools and weapons and worked in a tool shop owned by Baidyanath Mistry in 'Bangla Bazar', Dacca. However, when the British police conducted a raid, Amritlal fled to Calcutta, where the police found 87 cartridges in his personal cupboard. He then enrolled in the Bengal Technical Institute, and between 1909 and 1912, he became associated with the 'Dacca Anushilan Samiti' established on November 3, 1905, along with Makhanlal Sen, Pratul Ganguly, Troilakya Maharaj, Saradacharan Guha, Dinesh Chandra Dasgupta, and Upendranath Roychowdhury. They were all inspired by the revolutionary Pulin Bihari Das. While in Calcutta, he also started corresponding with the rebel groups of Chandannagar and Jatindranath's 'Jugantar Group'. He met freedom fighters like Rashbihari Basu and Motilal Roy.

Amritlal introduced Anushilan Samiti's Makhanlal Sen to the leaders of Chandannagar, Motilal Roy, and Shris. The primary location for bomb preparation were the houses of 296/1 and 119/4 Upper Circular Road. To lead the Dacca AnushilanSamiti, Amritlal took an active part in numerous robberies across various locations, such as Barrah, Naria, Kedarpur, Dadpur, Mohanpur, Manikganj, Panditchar, and Aynapur, among others. As a result, a warrant with a reward of Rs. 500 was issued in his name, which was later withdrawn.

In an attempt to assassinate the Viceroy, Lord Hardinge, and Mr. Gordon, the Magistrate of Srihatta, a bomb-making center was established in Rajabazar. However, the police were able to obtain information, and an arrest warrant was issued. In the famous Rajabazar Bomb Case on 21 November 1913, Amritlal was arrested alongside Dinesh Chandra Dasgupta, Saradacharan Guha, and Chandrashekhar Dey from 396/1, Upper Circular Road (now APC Road) by the then DC, CIDF. J. Lowman and his police force. The police seized banned political leaflets, booklets, detonators, and other documents.

Amritlal was charged under Section 120B and Section 4 of the Explosive Substance Act, tried, and ultimately sentenced to 15 years of transportation to the Cellular Jail in the Andamans, where he was imprisoned. After his release from prison, Amritlal returned to his hometown.
